The Peoria Diocese has much to learn from the LCMS. The conservative Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, like the Catholic Church, does not sanction same-sex relationships. Gene Svebakken, president and chief executive of the agency, Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois, visited all seven pastoral conferences in his state and explained that the best option was to compromise and continue caring for the children. “We’ve been around 140 years, and if we didn’t follow the law we’d go out of business,” Svebakken said. “We believe it’s God-pleasing to serve these kids, and we know we do a good job.”

The Clinton Development Initiative (CDI) is looking for volunteers with agricultural and technical expertise for 3–6 months this summer to support agricultural development projects in Malawi and Tanzania.
These CDI projects are greatly in need of the exact types of agricultural, technical, and policy expertise found at USDA: soil scientists, agronomists, geospatial information services specialists, food technologists, plant pathologists, agribusiness specialists, agricultural extension specialists, water management specialists, agricultural marketing specialists, seed breeders, and more.
The CDI would cover expenses; volunteers would give time, and in turn, help transform a community.
To receive more information about this volunteer opportunity, please contact Lona Stoll, Senior Manager for Global Food Security, Office of the Secretary, USDA, at Lona.Stoll@osec.usda.gov or 202-720-1122 by January 30, 2012.
Syrian rights activists and opposition groups said on Wednesday that forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad had killed at least 160 defecting soldiers, civilians and antigovernment activists over the last three days in northwestern Syria. If confirmed, the killings would constitute one of the worst spasms of violence in the nine-month-old uprising.
